Ear-based electrical taVNS vs body-worn vibration

The most important difference between Apollo Neuro and ZenoWell is the way stimulation reaches the body.

How Apollo Neuro works

Apollo Neuro uses patterned mechanical vibrations rather than electrical ear stimulation.

The wearable sends vibrations through the body that are experienced through the sense of touch. Apollo describes different Vibes for states such as relaxation, focus, sleep, energy, and recovery, with the pattern and feel changing according to the selected program.

How ZenoWell works

ZenoWell uses transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation, or taVNS.

Instead of placing a vibration wearable on the wrist or ankle, the user places an electrical earpiece in the left ear. The contact points are moistened with water or conductive gel before the user selects a stimulation mode and increases the intensity to a noticeable but comfortable level.

A typical Luna session follows a straightforward sequence:

  1. Connect the earpiece to the controller.
  2. Turn on the device.
  3. Moisten the contact points with water or conductive gel.

SmartVibes has become a central part of the current Apollo system.

One of its most distinctive features is Stay Asleep.

The Apollo Neuro experience

What research supports Apollo Neuro?

Apollo now has several published studies that are useful when evaluating the technology behind the current wearable.

2022: vibration and post-exercise recovery

A 2022 study published in the European Journal of Applied Physiology involved 22 university athletes completing strenuous cycling followed by recovery with vibration from a wearable transducer.

Vibration patterns that participants rated as more calming were associated with higher high-frequency HRV during recovery, particularly among athletes whose physiology had been more affected by the exercise.

2025: randomized wellbeing study

A 2025 prospective randomized pilot study included 66 medical and pharmacy students.

Participants were assigned either to use Apollo Neuro or to a waitlist control group. After 12 weeks, the Apollo group showed improvements in several burnout and wellbeing measures compared with the control group.

Because the comparison used a waitlist rather than a sham vibration condition, it represents a different type of study from a blinded active-versus-sham device trial.

2026: 935 users and 474,852 nights of sleep data

Apollo's largest recent sleep publication analyzed real-world data from 935 Apollo and Oura users across 474,852 nights.

The study examined the relationship between nighttime transcutaneous vibratory stimulation and total sleep time.

Among people whose baseline sleep was under six hours, using 240 minutes or more of nighttime stimulation was associated in the statistical model with approximately 36 additional minutes of total sleep time. Nighttime stimulation was also associated with lower odds of short total sleep time.

This was a retrospective observational study using real-world device data, so its design is different from a randomized active-versus-sham trial. Its value is the size and duration of the everyday-use dataset.

What research supports taVNS?

The research behind taVNS has developed along a broader academic path, with studies using different devices, electrode placements, stimulation settings, and populations.

Sleep is one area where recent randomized studies are particularly relevant.

72-participant randomized chronic insomnia trial

A randomized clinical trial published in JAMA Network Open enrolled 72 adults with chronic insomnia. Participants were assigned 1:1 to active taVNS or sham stimulation and completed an eight-week intervention.

At week eight, the active taVNS group showed a 4.2-point greater reduction in Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index score than the sham group.

40-participant double-blind sham-controlled trial

A separate study published in 2025 included 40 people with chronic insomnia and used a randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled design.

Participants received 30 minutes of taVNS or sham stimulation each day for six weeks. The active taVNS group showed greater improvements in Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index and Insomnia Severity Index scores, along with differences in total sleep time.

2026 systematic review and meta-analysis

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis brought together 14 randomized controlled trials investigating taVNS for sleep disorders, with 11 included in the meta-analysis.

The pooled results found improvements in sleep quality and time to fall asleep across the included studies.

The studies varied in stimulation protocols and participant groups, which is useful to keep in mind when looking at taVNS as a broader technology rather than one specific commercial routine.

Apollo research vs taVNS research
